The Most Ignored Commandment

Commandments

Just peruse Facebook. You’ll find out what’s JAZZY. What things have the BLING! Yeah, there’s still a lot of hate in the world, but the “in” thing is to LOVE. Love our neighbor. Are we good at it? No. Do we do it? Sometimes. Especially to those we like. As long as they think like us. As long as loving them doesn’t get too messy, we can actually do a decent job of it. So, overall… No, we don’t. But it’s still the “in thing to do.” I guess that’s good. It is the 2nd most important commandment according to Jesus. At least we (humanity) are getting something right, even if it’s truly just our way of saying, “This is what it’s all about… US! EACH OTHER! PEOPLE!” It’s also a great commandment to throw at anyone who doesn’t agree with the way we live. It’s like the nuclear weapon of Love. It’s right up there with “don’t judge,” another powerful word-weapon that can bring down our enemy lickety-split.

The second greatest commandment isn’t the most ignored though. Ironically, it’s the GREATEST commandment that takes a back seat.

  • Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. (Matthew 22:37, 38).

Ever wonder why this is a “command?” I mean, “Love your neighbor as yourself…” that one’s maybe a little more understandable. But why would God “command” that we love Him? …and not only that, but pose it as the greatest/most important command? Here’s my take on it. It’s because of how much He loves US! John 14:15 says, “If you love me, keep my commands.” So, in other words, if you want to obey the greatest command…keep the other commandments. How do we “love Him”? Keep His commands. What are His commands? Well, that’s too much typing… but the GREATEST one is listed above. God knows that if we will love Him with all of our heart, soul, and mind that we will want to obey His commands. He also knows that the most fulfilling life we could possibly live is one that follows His commands. So, in one way you could say this: His greatest command TO us turns out to be FOR us.

And that’s just like God…He always has our best interest in mind.

It’s His kindness that makes us want to turn from our own ways and serve Him! (Romans 2:4)
